Fundraising in a Down Economy for 2012?
I have officially seen it all, as a non profit and occasional political fundraiser for years I never cease to be amazed.
Sarah Palin is touring the country in an attempt to shore up support, President Obama is in the middle east and GM is now run by the government.
That is what is however let’s talk about where our fundraising dollars will be best spent. It is June 2009 and accross the country patriots of every color, size, shape, and gender are running for office. Not necessarily the offices that generate a ton of press but offices that matter in our day to day lives. It is the city council, mayoral, and school board races that shape America today. These people decide how much and when your garbage will be picked up, the condition of our streets, and even in the case of school board members the lunches your kids will eat.
So if you are feeling compelled to create a better America and you have to do more with less may I suggest helping in your own backyard.
Fundraising for a municipal office is not easy, not glamorous, not sexy in the least. There is normally little intrige and very little attention is paid. This is where small gifts mean the most.
So in the interest of helping create a better Americ through fundraising here is a quick tip:
1) Find a candidate or cause you love
2) Dedicate a few hours to finding out about them
3) Offer to help raise money
If you are not sure how try this:
hold a “no dinner” dinner. Invite your friends, family, everyone on your email and holiday card list. Tell them the date and that all that is required is a $5 donation. $5 that’s it, of course there is no dinner, no event but chances are they will be charmed by your approach and send their donation. Make sure checks are made out to the correct political committee and sent to the correct address.
In fundraising the rule of 4s works. Ask four people and one will say yes so invite/ask 100 people and 25 will give.
Even in times like this $5 can go a long way to elect people.
